Product Information

Enjoy superb Mediterranean impact with the deep red, arching, sword-shaped leaves of Cordyline ‘Red Star’. Splendid on the patio, contrasting beautifully with the more familiar greens of other plants and bringing a tropical feel to the garden.

A native of New Zealand, 'Red Star' is a compact and evergreen foliage plant with glorious arching, bronze-red leaves and, on mature plants, branches of sweetly fragranced, ivory-white flowers in summer.

An ideal specimen for growing in pots on patios and balconies, why not experiment and make a real tropical paradise by growing them alongside other tropical plants such as Cannas, or broad-leaved Zantedeschias.

Over time, this variety branches into a small, evergreen tree resembling a palm, creating a unique look all year-round and for many years, adding colour to the garden when all else begins to fade.

Easy to grow, Cordyline need little maintenance, and pruning is limited to just removing any dead leaves in the spring. Able to withstand -7C winter conditions, we do however suggest frost protection with fleece, wrapping, or bringing it into a garage or porch during those particularly cold months.

Plant in a pot and grow outside through summer before moving to a protected space such as a greenhouse or conservatory for the winter. As plants mature they become more frost hardy so can be left outside in all but the coldest weather.

Supplied as an established plant in a 5L pot, standing at roughly 60-80cm tall, ready to plant.

Please note: Delivery may take up to 14 days for this product. The approximate listed height of this variety and dimensions of the supplied nursery pot are subject to change on delivery, depending on seasonal conditions.

Top Tips

Plant into a decorative container for best effect.

Care Information

  • Water plants freely during the growing season, and sparingly in winter.
  • Feed monthly with a balanced, liquid fertiliser from spring to late summer.
  • Top-dress or pot up in spring. Although frost hardy, young Cordyline plants, and also coloured varieties are more prone to cold damage.
  • This can be prevented by tying up the foliage to reduce wind damage and prevent water collecting around growing points and causing rotting.
  • In areas prone to severe winters, wrap the trunk with layers of fleece and place a 15cm (6in) layer of mulch, such as bark, over the root area.
  • Move container grown plants to a frost-free location, such as a greenhouse, during periods of cold or wet weather - temporary shelter in a shed or garage will do.
