Product Information

Architectural drama in abundance! This flowering evergreen shrub brings interest to the garden regardless of the month. This Phormium is robust and reliable, producing long, strappy leaves in a unique shade of copper purple. Despite forming an idyllic foil for other vibrant flowering perennials, this is a beauty, with branching red flower spikes in summer.

Hardy once established and an all-round easy plant to grow, suited to most gardens, this perennial forms into a clump and looks impressive whether in a container on the patio or as a feature in a border. Commonly known as the New Zealand Flax, due to its origins, where the tough leaves were traditionally used in weaving and basket making.

Fully deserving its coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure this is a proven garden performer, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. You can therefore plant this in the garden with confidence, for stunning displays for many years to come.

Thankfully you won’t be waiting around for this Phormium to impress, as it is supplied already at least 1m tall, ready to make instant impact on your garden. Supplied as an established plant in a 15L pot, 100-125cm tall, ready to plant.

Top Tips

Protect young plants with a thick mulch over winter to protect the crown.

Care Information

Planting Advice:

  • Grow Phormiums in a sunny, sheltered site in well-drained soil.  Protect from frost and winds.
  • Dig a planting hole three times wider than the roots and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill once in place.
  • We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges, tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.
  • Before planting, soak container-grown nursery plants thoroughly and allow them to drain.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots to help the plant to establish quicker.
  • Place in the hole at the same level as it was supplied in the pot and refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling). Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and then water well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.
  • If you're planting into pots, place some old rocks, stones, or gravel in the bottom of the pot for drainage and ballast.
  • Use the best compost you can buy and some sand or grit for drainage.

Aftercare Advice:

  • Keep plants well-watered while they establish, especially if planted up in a pot.
  • Phormiums require no special pruning; only occasional maintenance is needed to remove any growth that has been damaged over winter.
