Product Information

A new variety of the ever-popular Cherry Laurel, ‘Novita’ boasts a far hardier twist, withstanding cold and tough winter conditions well below freezing.

This is a bushy and evergreen shrub you can really rely upon, remaining coated in interest regardless of the season. The leaves are big, green, and glossy – just what you want from a decorative garden shrub, with the potential to grow tree-like, up to an impressive 5m tall. Plus, this isn't a plant you'll be waiting around to feel impressed by, as it arrives as an established statement plant, already more than 1m tall.

Whether planted en masse as hedging or alone as a shapely specimen plant, the hardy ‘Novita’ Prunus laurocerasus is a versatile treat and a perfect addition to more-or-less any garden scheme, size, or style.

Spring brings a scattering of dainty white flowers, regularly followed by clusters of ornamental, dark red berries in autumn, which birds will happily pick off the plant. What’s more, this variety has been labelled by the RHS as a ‘Plant for Pollinators’ due to its ability to attract the attention of bees, butterflies, and all manner of other beneficial insects.

Supplied as an established plant in a 18L pot, roughly 125-150cm tall, ready to plant.

Top Tips

Easy to grow in any moist but well-drained, moderately fertile soil in sun or partial shade. Its spreading habit makes it useful for low hedges and massed planting.

Care Information

Planting Advice:

  • Grow Cherry Laurel in well-drained soil in any sunny or partially shaded site. This variety will even tolerate growing conditions in full shade.
  • Dig a planting hole three times the width of the existing roots and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill once in place.
  • A square hole is typically better than a round one as new roots, once they reach the edges, tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole, whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.
  • Before planting soak this container-grown shrub thoroughly and allow it to drain.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.
  • Place the shrub in the hole at the same level it was in the supplied nursery pot and refill the hole with the earth removed, in a process called backfilling.
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball, then water well to help kick-start establishment.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.

Aftercare Advice:

  • Keep plants well-watered while they establish.
  • Hardy in winter conditions down to -15C to -20C, protect young plants from cold winds as this can cause damage.

Pruning Advice:

  • Cherry Laurel can be trimmed in spring or autumn to keep them tidy and shapely. If pruning at the end of the season, when growth has finished, do it before the onset of very cold weather.
