Description

A reliable and popular, high-yielding variety, ‘Masterpiece Green Longpod’ is considered by many to be the best broad bean you can grow. The seeds are quick to germinate, either indoors in pots or outdoors planted directly into their cropping position, generating vigorous plants that will provide plenty of fresh, tasty beans for your plate – and plenty more for the freezer.

True to its name, this variety produces particularly long, regularly formed pods, each containing 6 to 8 juicy beans. Harvesting from June onwards, the younger you pick them, the more tender the beans will be; or leave them to mature a while longer if you prefer larger beans. You can even cook the young pods whole; just top and tail them, and then gently steam to retain the best of their flavour and texture.

If you harvest more beans than you can eat, just blanch them and put into an airtight container or bag, then store in your freezer until required. They will retain their shape and texture well and be just as delicious cooked from frozen.

Being a worthy recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure of good-quality, plentiful crops that are easy and rewarding to grow. Sow indoors from February to April for planting out from April to May, or sow outdoors from February to May, in a sunny position directly where they are to crop, 60cm apart in well-drained, fertile soil. Harvest from June to August.

Supplied as a single packet of approximately 45 seeds ready to plant indoors in individual pots or outdoors in their cropping position. Grows to 1.2m by 30cm spread.

Top Tips
  • Pinch out growing tips when first pods are approx. 10cm (4in) long. This encourages an early crop and helps deter blackfly.
  • Ideal for freezing.
Care Information

How to grow Broad Beans

  • Sow outdoors, February to May, where they are to crop, 5cm (2in) deep, directly into finely prepared, well-cultivated, fertile soil that has already been watered. To make best use of space, sow seeds 23cm (9in) apart in a wide row, in a zigzag pattern, leaving a space of 60cm (24in) between each row. Seedlings usually appear in 10-18 days. Early sowings benefit from cloche protection. Water well until plants are established, and again at the start of flowering if the weather is dry. Once the plants reach 15cm tall, support with sturdy canes and string. Successional sowings will ensure a continuous supply and longer harvest.
  • Or sow indoors, February to April, 2.5cm (1in) deep into individual pots of compost. Water well and place in a warm position. A temperature of 15-20°C (60-68°F) is ideal. Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out 23cm (9in) apart.
  • Harvest: June to August, usually 8-10 weeks after sowing. Regular picking will encourage further cropping.

Aftercare

  • Light soils may require more frequent watering for optimum growing conditions.
Delivery Information

Please allow us 3-5 working days to dispatch your order. Pre-ordered items will be sent as soon as possible after the date quoted and we'll generally ship your entire order with your pre-ordered items. When your order is dispatched, we'll send you another email with details of how to track it.

Most orders are sent on a fully-tracked courier service with Yodel. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, no signature is required, and our courier is asked to leave your order in a safe place on your property.

We'll send a tracking link when we dispatch your order, so you know when its due to arrive. Please note, once delivered we cannot be held responsible for loss or theft from your property. If you have any specific delivery instructions, please let us know - there's an option to enter a short message for the courier at the checkout.

Smaller, lighter, single-item orders may be sent through the post with Royal Mail - in which case no tracking is available.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.

Please note, we cannot guarantee delivery on a certain day or time. Delivery to outlying postcode areas may take 1-2 days longer, dependent on your location.
